Timothy Coleman NAME

I have been designing and building furniture in my Western Massachusetts studio since 1989. I received my formal training as an apprentice to Seattle furniture maker Curt Minier in 1985, and after that as a student for two years at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg, California under the direction of James Krenov.

My work is defined by gracefully balanced forms and richly textured surfaces. I am drawn to the detailed pattern work from cultures around the world, particularly that of  Persia, India and Asia. I incorporate these pattern influences in my work in original ways through the use of marquetry, parquetry, low relief carving and embossed surfaces.

Sometimes the inspiration for a piece is specific, such as the solid simplicity of Chinese furniture, the dynamic forms and innovative use of material from the Art Deco period, or a particular piece of wood I have. Other times inspiration is more elusive: a shape, a mood, something from nature. My pieces may deviate from traditional furniture forms, but the construction process is rooted in centuries of classical furniture technique. Carefully executed joinery and a thorough attention to the natural properties of wood ensure that my furniture will endure for generations.

Since 1988 I have shown my work in galleries throughout the country, including Pritam and Eames in East Hampton, NY, The Dane Gallery in Nantucket, MA, Sharada Gallery in Hudson, NY, Highlight Gallery in Mendocino, CA, and Sansar Gallery in Bethesda, MD. I am a permanent member of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association, and I have been an instructor at the Brookfield Craft Center, The College of the Redwoods and Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, as well as publishing articles in Fine Woodworking Magazine.
